I did this when I was 15. I wonder if some things are easier to convey at that age? ^_^ This is an original character done in pen.

Wow, thanks!!! ^0^ I love to draw too! But I don't really have time for it...>.< waaaa, I have loads more artwork,
it's all too big for my scanner, so I'm gonn have to do some creative copyshop magic ^0^' so that I can upload it!!!

The book "Drawing words, writing pictures" has a section about scanning things larger than your scanner, but it is for comics ^^;
1. Scan it in in two parts, make sure there is an overlap.
2. Open your image editior, make the smaller segment a second layer.
3. Move the second layer untill it matches up with the background
4. Lasso and delete the area of overlap.
This is for comics and assumes that you have a nice gutter somewhere in the area of overlap, which can be slightly out of kilter with no problems. But this might help?
